Root canal therapy, also called endodontics, is used to save teeth that are fractured or have very deep decay. During the procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

The specialists at Whistler Dental are highly skilled to treat and repair natural teeth, preventing the possible need for extraction, leaving the patient comfortable and back on the road to good oral health.

In order to ensure recovery is as smooth and comfortable as can be, we recommend following these 5 tips after root canal treatment:

Pain Management

Following root canal treatment, you may experience tenderness and inflammation in the area, however, in most cases, these symptoms will only last a couple of days. Most pain can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen, however, in some cases, your dentist may be able to prescribe stronger pain medication.

If pain persists for longer than a few days, it is recommended to check in with your dentist.

Another way to manage pain is to do activities which will keep your mind off of it — go for a walk, read a book, visit with friends or whatever you feel you can manage.

Choose Foods Wisely

Due to the sensitivity that may occur post-treatment, it’s important to be selective with the foods you eat. Hard foods, chewy foods and foods that are spicy can irritate the area even more than it already is and possibly displace the temporary filling in some patients.

It is recommended to choose softer foods such as soups, oatmeal and scrambled eggs. It’s also recommended to be mindful of the temperature of the foods you eat. Eating foods that are too hot or cold may also irritate the area.

Practice Good Oral Healthcare

Following a good oral healthcare routine will not only help with the root canal recovery, but it will also protect your other teeth and possibly prevent future procedures. Simple habits such as brushing twice a day and flossing can make a huge difference to your oral health. However, be sure to brush and floss gently as not to irritate the area or disturb the temporary filling. Scheduling regular checkups and cleanings are also highly recommended.

Get the Crown Placed As Soon As Possible

After the initial root canal treatment, a temporary filling is inserted until the mouth has time to heal and a permanent crown can be put in place. It is important that this crown is placed as soon as recommended by your dentist. Delaying this step of the treatment can lead to damage to the tooth.

Follow Instructions Given by Your Dentist

Of course every patient’s procedure, treatment and recovery will be unique to them and it is important that they follow the special instructions given to them by their dentist. Following your dentist’s instructions will ensure a speedy and smooth recovery.
