child teething - pediatric dentistry

It’s almost back to school and we’re going to kick off learning-mode with a session on the ABC’s of pediatric dentistry. Pediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry which oversees the oral health of a child from birth through to their adolescence. Commencing a regular check-up routine and proper oral healthcare from a young age can help prevent serious oral health problems and help your child maintain healthy teeth and gums well into their adulthood.

A Child’s First Dental Checkup

According to the Canadian Dental Association, children should start seeing a dentist just after they start getting their first set of teeth. For some children, this can be as early as 6 months old. An infant’s first dental visit will generally involve a visual exam to assess if new teeth are growing in a healthy manner.

Beating the Problems

By the time your child has their first birthday, they should be having dental appointments twice a year. This checkup routine should continue throughout childhood.

A regular dental checkup routine can aid in the prevention of serious dental issues down the road, including early stages of tooth decay. Regular checkups ensure that issues are detected early and treatment can be given as needed and as simply as possible.

Regular checkups can also help identify bad habits such as thumb-sucking and poor diet, which can also lead to oral health issues.
